Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray was honored with the seventh annual Harvey Ball Smile Award. Timothy Murray

The award was presented at The Harvey Ball, an annual dinner-dance hosted by the Worcester Historical Museum to be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Grand Ballroom at the DCU Center, 50 Foster St., Worcester.

The smile award honors the memory and legacy of Worcester native Harvey Ball, who in 1963 created the bright yellow smiley face, which went on to become an international icon of good cheer. The "Harvey" is presented to an individual, organization or group of individuals whose commitments have made a difference in the city of Worcester - and brought a smile to the face of people throughout the community.

"This is Worcester's chance to celebrate two native sons - Tim Murray and Smiley Face," said William D. Wallace, the museum's executive director.

Past Harvey recipients are: Allen W. Fletcher, Denis Leary, Leslie Courtney, John W. Spillane, Charles F. Monahan Jr. and Richard B. Kennedy.

This year's annual ball celebrates the 1970s. Those who attend are encouraged to wear '70s attire, from polyester leisure suits to black tie. The band 9-Teen will provide music.

Cocktails and a silent auction will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards ceremony until 8 p.m. and dessert and dancing from 8:30 to 11 p.m.
